The series takes place in a cozy neighborhood bar called "Cheers" which is owned by ex-ballplayer Sam Malone. When Diane Chambers, a pretty, young teacher, is jilted and abandoned in the pub, Sam offers her a job as a cocktail waitress.
Her high-brow intellectualism quickly makes her an object of derision for Carla Tortelli, the sharp-tongued drink-slinger with whom she works, as well as a source of good-natured ribbing for Norm and Cliff, two working-class habitues of this local watering hole.
